Student Health Insurance

The North Dakota University System (NDUS) is pleased to offer health insurance coverage to NDUS students through United Healthcare insurance company. Domestic students (i.e. American citizens) are not required by the NDUS to carry this coverage, and we know many of you may be covered by your parents' insurance until age 26. However, the Affordable Care Act does require that you carry some sort of health insurance, and this plan is an option.

Enrollment
Domestic students must enroll on their own at the United Healthcare Website: www.UHCSR.com/NDUS .Premiums must be paid at the time of enrollment. For the 2017-2018 Annual Plan and the 2017 Fall Plan, students must enroll by September 15, 2017.

International students are automatically enrolled by semester in the student health insurance plan by their institution. The premium cost is billed to the international student's campus connection account.  

Plan Coverage Periods and Premiums
Annual (August 16, 2017-August 15, 2018): $1748.00
Fall (August 16, 2017 - December 31, 2017): $661.00
Spring/Summer (January 1, 2018-August 15, 2018): $1,087.00  

Waiver of NDUS designated policy:
International students may be eligible for a waiver of the NDUS designated insurance if they are able to provide proof of comparable coverage.   Waivers are granted in only a few exceptional situations, typically when:  

· Coverage is already provided through a U.S. employer;
· Coverage is already provided through a parent or spouse's U.S. based employer; or
· The student's home country provides universal coverage through a national health insurance plan, AND the coverage meets all of the required waiver criteria.  

Waivers are NOT intended or granted for students who are searching for a lower priced plan/premium.  

Waiver Criteria
For international students "comparable health insurance coverage" means that the alternate health insurance plan meets all of the following criteria:  
· Coverage must be active by the first day of the Student Health Insurance Policy semester: August 16, 2017 for fall semester or January 1, 2018 for spring semester.
· The insurance company must be owned and operated in the U.S. (offshore insurance companies do not meet this requirement).
· Plan Benefits must meet Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements including all of the following:
    o  Pre-existing conditions must be covered with no waiting period;
    o  Preventive Care must be covered at 100%;
    o  Plan must have an unlimited policy maximum;  
· The annual individual deductible must be $500 or less;
· The co-insurance plan payment must be 75% or higher;
· Benefits must include prescription drug coverage;
· Benefits must include maternity coverage for the insured person;
· Benefits must include both inpatient and outpatient mental health services with no limits;
· Benefits must include substance abuse services;
· Benefits must include coverage for self-inflicted injury or suicide;
· Benefits must include intercollegiate sports injuries for student athletes; and
· The plan must have Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefits paid at 100% with unlimited benefits.*  

*Note: If Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefits are the only criteria not met by an alternate policy, the student will be given an opportunity to purchase those services through United Healthcare during the waiver process.
