Williston, N.D., April 23rd__To conclude sexual assault awareness month (April), WSC Counseling Services and Student Life will be hosting Walk a Mile in her Shoes, on the front drive April 30th. With the goal to bring awareness to sexual assaults and abuse, Walk a Mile in her Shoes and similar walks occur all over the United States to educate communities about prevention by bringing them together.
"This event plays off the saying 'You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes,'" Leah Hoffman, LAC, Mental Health Counselor at Williston State College explained. "For this event we challenge men to literally walk one-mile in women's high-heeled shoes (red ones if you have them). It's not easy or comfortable, but it is a creative and fun way to get the community to talk about this important issue."
To start off the month, WSC counseling services created a video, promoting the It's on Us initiative, an awareness campaign brought by the Obama administration to help put an end to sexual assaults on college campuses. "We felt the walk would be a good opportunity to continue to promote our It's On Us initiative, which focuses particularly on motivating college men to make a commitment to preventing sexual assault. By getting men involved, they can set new standards and become role models for younger classes," Hoffman stated. "Our goal is to have each attendee walk away with more knowledge and understanding of the bystander effect and to feel more comfortable challenging each other to do the right thing."
Community members are welcome to bring their families and friends and women are encouraged to participate alongside for support with no registrations or heels necessary. "We encourage our local business to sponsor employees to take the challenge. You can sponsor someone by simply making a donation on their behalf," Hoffman explained.
To register for the Walk a Mile event, each walker will be asked to make a donation to our beneficiary, the Williston Family Crisis Shelter. All proceeds raised from this event will be given to the shelter. Registration will be at 5:30 and the walk will begin at 6:00pm. Grill on main will be offering a free-will donation from 5:30-8:30, music will be provided by Jeff Nelson and the Music Machine and free Jump-n-Fun inflatables will be on campus. Prizes will be awarded for best heels, best dressed, best walk and fastest lap. Though some heels will be provided, there is a limited supply, so if you can please bring your own.
