WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College's (WSC) Math and Science department received a generous donation of chemistry glassware worth just over $6,000 from NDSU Williston Research Extension Center (WREC) November 5.
WREC Plant Pathologist Dr. Audrey Kalil contacted Derek VanderMolen, WSC Associate Professor of Chemistry, as the center was looking to clear out excess glassware.
"Instead of throwing the excess away, Dr. Kalil and the center wanted to help local chemistry labs, and we were lucky to have been contacted," VanderMolen explained. "This donation will help us have extra glassware to cover the growing student population and to provide backups for when things break."
The donation included volumetric flasks, separatory funnels, side-arm flasks, glass pipettes, round-bottom flasks, glass bottles, and various glass stoppers. Everything donated is glassware that WSC currently has and uses, but glassware is expensive and this allowed WSC to increase their inventory at no cost.
WSC and WREC plan to continue this relationship through student internships in the future.
"Dr. Kalil mentioned to me that they are always interested in any student wishing to intern with them," VanderMolen stated. "So far I have had over a dozen students express interest in internships, and I hope that some may choose to intern at the center which would allow us to grow our partnership even further beyond their generous donation."
