WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College is pleased to announce that Joseph Marshall III will be on campus Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. to sign copies of five of his books, including "Lakota Way: Stories & Lessons for Living," "Walking With Grandfather: The Wisdom of Lakota Elders," and "Power of Four: Leadership Lessons of Crazy Horse". These books will be offered for sale in the WSC Bookstore and Marshall will be signing books in the Teton Lounge, in front of the bookstore.
According to Kim Weismann, Instructor of Communication at WSC, Marshall is coming to WSC to lead a leadership seminar for WSC employees, who will be in the midst of their in-service week.
"We decided that since he was going to be here, it would be nice to tie in a community event," she said. He will also meet with the WSC internal leadership academy to help kick off the school year.
According to his website, www.josephmarshall.com, "Marshall was born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and raised by his maternal grandparents. He is an historian, educator, motivational speaker and Lakota craftsman; he has worked as both technical advisor and actor in television movies, including Return to Lonesome Dove. A recipient of the Wyoming Humanities Award, he is author of numerous collections of essays and short stories."
"Anybody who enjoys learning about Native American culture and who enjoys reading will want to come meet him," Weismann said. "He's very down to earth and easy to listen to. He's very empowering."
The event is open and free to the public and Weismann encourages everyone to come to WSC on Tuesday.
"It's not very often that we get a well-known author in the area and this is a great opportunity for the community," she said.
