WILLISTON, N.D. - Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Williston State College's (WSC) honor society, is hosting a Giving Tree to help the Family Crisis Shelter in Williston and Watford City for Christmas.
"We wanted to try and brighten those who have fallen on hard times this holiday season by getting the mothers and children presents," Maren Furuseth, Assistant Professor of Accounting and PTK Advisor stated. "In 2013, we only had 14 names from the Crisis Shelter, but this year it has grown to 48."
This Giving Tree is not the only charitable thing PTK has done this semester. In November, PTK hosted a successful Thanksgiving Drive that filled half of a moving truck with donations for Williston's Salvation Army. Donations including food items, clothing items, baby diapers, and wipes.
"We work very hard to make our events successful," Furuseth explained. "Even with the few in the group [2015 PTK has six members], we still accomplish the same activities as when I had over 20 students in the club. We have a special group of students that really care about the community and want to help out as much as they can."
After news broke that PTK was looking for financial donations for their Thanksgiving Drive, American Petroleum Institute (API) board members reached out to donate in return for volunteers helping at the API banquet held at WSC. API awarded $1,000 towards PTK's Thanksgiving Drive for Salvation Army.
The Giving Tree was set up by the PTK on December 2 Furuseth was happy to announce that just one week later all 48 ornaments were no longer on the tree. Originally a little overwhelmed by the amount of ornaments, PTK is relieved by the generosity of WSC and the community. Each gift will be wrapped and placed under the tree before December 17 so that the Family Crisis Shelter has them all in time for Christmas.
